This is false.
It is not according to “Greek Mythology”.
Plato’s Symposium was a fiction in which he used Socrates, as well as many other real people of Greece as characters to describe and praise love. Aristophanes, the character used to describe love this way-who was also the man to eventually sealed Socrates fate indirectly-was a comic playwright at the time. He was most famous for his play entitled, “Clouds” in which he satirized Socrates as an obnoxious old man that pestered everyone with questions.
Everything else is true, but the fact that Aristophanes was the character used to describe love this way indicates that it was a sarcastic poetry he was declaring this with.
If it was common understanding in Ancient Greece, then it wouldn’t serve much of a purpose for Aristophanes to use this in dialogue amongst the educated greek men also present in the setting.
I do love this part of Plato’s work, I just wish this was more accurate.
